Facts about Hard Drive Recovery

Why do hard drives fail?

Hard drives fail for a variety of reasons. These failures are either categorized as logical failures or physical failures.

Physical failures are generally failures where the drive heads are defective, motor is seized, or  internal electronics fail. These failures are often fixed by using "donor" parts from similar hard drives in a controlled, clean environment.

Logical failures are generally due to OS corruption, hard drive firmware failures, bad sectors, accidental file deletion, or virus outbreaks. These issues are often handled by using special hardware to read information from the disk in a safe manner, and software to reconstruct the files.

What are the most common reasons for failure?

In our experience, we see 25% of problems as mechanical and 75% of issues logical.

Of the 25% of disks we see with mechanical issues, 40% of issues related to "circuit board failures" (due to static electricity or excessive heat), 25% are related to "head crashes" (the component that reads data from the disk platters), and the rest are other assorted issues (platter scarring, motor failures).

How do you recover media that has physical issues?

When dealing with physical data recovery issues, the Data Recovery company must find "donor" parts for the hard drive. It it essential that each hard drive is matched with the exact donor parts from a similar model. Each hard drive has very specific logic boards, firmware software, and other mechanical parts.

For parts that we do not have in stock, we consult a local supplier to determine if we can quickly obtain the appropriate parts (if needed) to service your drive. When you submit your case, we determine if the parts are available in a timely manner. We will notify you of the additional cost associated with ordering donor parts, if any. PerfectPC Services does not "mark up" the cost of donor parts. You pay what we pay!

If the platters that contain the data are heavily damaged, it is unlikely that your data can be retrieved (by us, or another data recovery company).

How long will it take for PerfectPC Services to recover my data?

Most data recovery jobs take between 2 to 4 weeks. Data recovery is a very tedious process and highly dependent on the type of damage the drive has sustained.

Upon receipt and initial analysis of your hard drive, we will notify you with our estimate to how long the recovery will take.

What do I pay if you cannot recover my Data?

You pay a small charge for UPS ground shipping, packaging, and handling. This fee is $25. You will also pay for any parts that we consume during the diagnostic and recovery process.

We work with numerous partners who have different areas of expertise. We will refer you, at no cost, to the appropriate partner.
